Creating a safe dance space at home
Here are some tips for making your at-home dance space safer.
Make sure you have as much space as possible for dancing.
Clear away any furniture, cords, loose rugs, or items that you might bump into, trip on, or accidentally knock over.
Use bright, overhead lighting.
Use a mirror so you can see your full body if possible. Be careful with leaning mirrors or glass mirrors as these could be a hazard. Consider glassless mirrors, which are safer and lighter-weight:
Floor: dance floor or gym flooring is optimal, hardwood also works well. Try to avoid stone or ceramic tile and concrete as these surfaces can be hard on the joints over time.
Resources for covering your floor:
Interlocking foam mats: Inexpensive option for laying over concrete or stone tiles
Foam mats (wood look) 5/8″ Thick – 2′ x 2′ Tile (Case of 25)
Shoes: if you are unable to dance on good flooring, cushioned dance shoes such as jazz shoes or ballet slippers are the next best option.
Sound: use a good speaker system or wireless headphones with noise cancellation for hearing the classes. Noise cancellation head phones or ear plugs are recommended if practicing finger cymbals (zils) as the high frequencies created by the cymbals can be harmful to your hearing.
Minimize distractions during your dance class time. Make sure family members and pets do not interrupt you while practicing (if possible).
